The status of this year's Notting Hill Carnival remains uncertain due to all the trouble and rioting from last week. Notting Hill was unfortunately one of the areas that the rioters targeted: shoe shop Office on Portobello Road was broken into, with its windows smashed and products looted; while diners at the Ledbury were attacked and had their posessions stolen by gangs before staff leapt to their defence.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council (RBKC) welcomes the measures but will continue to oberseve the situation in London before making any concrete decisions.
If the Carnival does go ahead, it will likely be a more compomised outing in order to reduce the risk of trouble. This includes an early start and finish to the famous street party.
Ancil Barclay, the Carnival director, told the BBC that: "We are looking at a 9am kick off... putting measures in place to ensure we can enforce that this year and I think it's an important step to ensure the safety of performers and spectators."
In response to the riots, the local community organised Operation Cup of Tea last Friday (12 August), serving free cups of tea and biscuits kindly donated by residents and local businesses.
